@kauna Oh I was at the dermatologist today and he had tried Binky on cerebra it’s a travel tablet for animals she takes 1/2 a tablet a day and it stops itching! Her skin has improved, so we are keeping her on it for 4 weeks then she will gradually come off this and steriods, but will probably be on atopica forever but hopefully only a few days a wk! Xxx

because my vet and the specialist said we could get many false positive results.

They told me not to allergy test Yoda and Sam ,
treated for the presented symptoms
Yoda cleared up fine

Sam dog is on Apoquel after Battling severe allergies
World of difference like a new dog

Other members have asked about Apoquel for cats and I read it is sometimes used in severe cases

Just a quick update for the allergies! We are in spring currently so all the pollen is in the air and cannot have windows opened. (See another post it been a rough week) lol!

We are on the maintenance dose of 0.5 ml every 3 weeks. Her next injection is next week on Wednesday, we have a follow up visit with the dermatologist on Tuesday. I'll be sure to post an update with what he says.

So far what I have noticed from this is it may get worse before it gets better. I do give 1/2 tablet of zyrtec if she starts to have more itching. She is still doing well with me giving the injections (but she sure does recognize the box when it comes out of the fridge and tries to hide) lol!

Dermatology/ Allergy follow up appointment was on Tuesday!

She is doing well with her maintenance dose. She had her allergy injection on Wednesday after the appointment. Due to her asthma she is on a half dose regimen at 0.5 ml every 3 weeks. Usually they are on 1 ml dose every 3 weeks. He was amazed at how well her skin was looking. She only had a couple of patches of irritation but overall not as irritated as when he first saw her. (I purposely didn't give her a bath either lol!)

We are considering upping the dose to every 2 weeks. The idea is that it is a curve schedule and we want to give the injection when she is closer to the top of the curve so as to keep her symptoms at bay. I did find out that she is in fact allergic to humans We were discussing the week that I had the windows opened and caused her all kinds of misfortune. The maple tree pollen is a big thing right now and she of course is allergic to it and he mentioned that human dander is in her vaccine! I somehow missed that in the beginning.

She is very comfortable at this vet, she was exploring the room and when Dr. P came in she elicited attention from him. She even sat on his lap. He was surprised at how social she was and mentioned that he doesn't think that he has ever had a feline patient just come and sit on his lap. lol! Now, if only I can get her to get over the car sickness we will be good!

Next follow up appointment isn't until November.

We did both kinds of allergy testing for Aggie. She had blood allergy testing and the vet also did some poke tests. (applied the allergen directly under the skin with a needle) I think the most accurate test is the poke allergy testing. You can visually see what they react to, I think for cats it is easier to do the blood testing first and do additional poke testing for things that aren't in the blood test.

My mother just had her pitbull allergy tested and that vet shaved her and did all poke testing. She has had allergies for years and had been giving steroids, hypoallergenic diet, and I believe apoquel. I think after I did it for Agnes it got her to thinking of the possibility of having her Gracie tested. She is doing the sublingual method. where she gives a liquid under the tongue. I am not sure that one method works better than the other. I will have to ask her more about the details when she is back from her vacation.

I agree allergies are a pain to figure out. My olde english bulldogge had them and we did the blood allergy testing for him many years ago to see what he was allergic to. but he did just fine with benadryl twice daily and medicated baths weekly. He never needed anything more than that. He was a dog that was allergic to cats, and I always found it funny (we couldn't have a cat while he was with us)

Here I go again with my Sam dog allergies flare up this morning .. ugh ..he is on Apoquel but almost like clock work each year his left eye has allergies ... started his erythromycin this morning on his eye .

Please let me when your mum gets back what she is using for Gracie . May he,p while I brain storm with my two vets again next week.

My Sam is allergic to benedryl .. face swelled like a basketball and cracked skin eyes shut hot mess Last year . My vet told me benedryl can be funky with some pets systems .
For my boy she suggested not allergy testing because we could get too many false positives ..
Though she didn’t mention which method of testing .

Definitely can relate to the allergy rodeo ...

ps I can only share for sickness that I withheld food , put kitty in a plastic crate with a towel and a yeooow catnip banana , ( read catnip can be calming and I was picking up kitties on short notice so went for it ) covered crate on 3 sides with a towel amd they didn’t get sick for the 7 hour ride ..

@Yoda mom Awww hugs to you and your Sam! Allergies are no fun. I haven't heard of a dog being allergic to benadryl. That's a new one for me!

I have a new foster pup that was rescued from being dumped in an alley in Texas with wounds and hair loss. Balboa, is what the rescue named him as he is a fighter. We are battling a horribly itchy skin scenario currently. The vets think it was due to chemical burns due to the scarring that this poor little guy has. He is itchy beyond belief!! I have been giving him medicated baths now twice weekly and treating him with hydroxyzine to help him not chew his legs off. He has practically been in a cone of shame since coming to my house. We can't do apoquel as he is also heartworm positive, which we are treating him for; because he is immune compromised already. I am starting to wonder if he has allergies too! This foster is going to be here for a long while I think. Now if only I can get Aggie to come around to him we would be all good!! Lucky for her he has to be calm so he is in a separate part of the house to not get overly excited playing with Otto and Delilah.

Just a quick update. We had our 6month recheck appointment and she is doing pretty well. We changed her diet to a prescription diet ultimino by royal canin. The dermatologist was impressed with her skin! (Disclaimer: we had a skin infection prior to switching the food which was the reason for the change)
We are increasing her injections from every 3weeks to every 2. She has not had any asthma flair ups since her last visit!!! Yay!! So definitely helping there. She is on 0.5 ml instead of the typical 1.0 ml dose due to having asthma. Typically with allergy injections you do not start to see results for 12 to 18 months and we have them in 7 is amazing!!
