After months of thinking our baby has ibs and a sensitive stomach to pretty much every protein on the market.....we just new it was something else......so.....we took him in to have a different test done other than just a fecal sample. He came back positive for this cryptosporidium parasite!!! Happy to finally know the truth, but scared because there is not one specific way to kill it. Our vet says he's probably had it before he even left the breeder, but when he got sick and his immune system was vulnerable.....it started showing it's ugly self! Has anyone encountered this and what antibiotic did your vet prescribe??? If you know anything about our little guys story you will know this has been a rough road. Any advice will be welcomed gladly.

@Nilda smarba I'm chiming in to send positive healing vibes your way for your precious baby boy. I don't think I've heard of this before.

What specific test was performed to finally reveal this parasite? I'm glad you finally got an answer as to what is causing his stomach issues, but if your vet doesn't seem to have a clue what the best way to treat it is, maybe you need to go to a University or a specialist.

Wishing you the best with him and please come back and update us.

I did a search here on the site and found a few threads where members had the same issue- http://sphynxlair.com/community/search/869487/?q=Cryptosporidium&o=date :)

Our vet is consulting specialists. They are wonderful. Azithromicin (pardon my spelling) and another antibiotic is recommended. This poor kid :( they did a swab test and had it sent out. We have to boil all of his water and keep his areas squeaky clean

So he is prescribed azithromicin for a 2 week period. He more than likely had this from the breeder and when he came down with a horrible upper respiratory infection......his immune system was so weak that the cryptospiridium parasite took over his intestinal tract. At that point we had only had him about 3 weeks and he had tested positive for giardia on a fecal sample test. We notified the breeder at that time in case he had litter mates, but have heard nothing since. We are convinced that they just don't care once they have your money :(
Thank god for our new vet and this test! We would have never known. If your cat is having serious bowel issues....this may be it. Prayers that this antibiotic nails this parasite once and for all!!!! If you need any help or have questions just message me :) everyone here helped me so much! Hopefully I can help someone's poor kitty

@Nilda smarba I'm glad you have a vet that gave you definitive answers and your little one is on the mend now. Was Albon or any other medicine Rx'ed?

Are you and your family also taking precautions against the parasite?

I wish you all the best and thank you for wanting to help others should this come up again.

The vet suggested we go through the 2 wk period of the azithromicin and hopefully it kills the parasite dead! He's confident now that we know what's going on. I wash Clark's water bowl every night and fill with boiled and cooled clean water. He's also getting his claws and in between his toes baby wiped every day ( which he's not thrilled about). We are making sure to Lysol and keep all his areas extra clean around the litter box . And he's getting a bath twice as often. He's such a ball of fun......you'd never think his hiney was hurting as bad as it is. We keep our pets bowls and beds really clean as it is so it's not much more maintenance than usual. Any suggestions welcomed :)
