Interesting none of ours has herpes but when the URI issues were never ending in 3 cats our vet recommended it. I said we are already using it, and he was very pleased we had already read up and had started. I am not a vet, but a supplement is not a "treatment" for one specific disease. There are many mentions of L-Lysine helping URIs not just herpes. Not saying your vet is wrong, but lots of literature is out there. There are many things it seems to "boost" in cats, dogs and humans. I think you will enjoy your research.

I am not giving mine l-Lysine yet. But I intend to because my Eva could use a boost, I think, and it won't hurt Kwazi any.

But what's the best kind? There's gel and paste and powder and treats...so many choices.

I have found Viralys powder to be the cheapest. We have 2 who do not like treats, so it works out for us to use the powder.

I'm fairly certain that Eva will eat *anything* (still no hair band btw). We call her the walking dumpster. Kwazi doesn't seem too particular. I'll check my local pet stores and see what I can find locally first. Thanks :)

I purchased Lysine for people - powdered in a gel capsule and just break it open. No other ingredients. ...couldn't find it in pet store so it seemed the best option.

I am using lysine treats right now because that is all my local pet store had. The cats like them.

We brought Nero in because he was sneezing and coughing and had runny goopy eye, just one. VET said it was most likely conjunctivitis, and that he had herpes probably from mom. so l-lysine was suggested to be given as our daily supplement, now 3 months later he still has the runny goopy eye, but the coughing and sneezing is gone.

I was just answering a new member's post about L-Lysine. I think when new members read about L-Lysine it can be confusing because herpes is usually mentioned in the articles along with it. Just a quick show of hands...lol. Who uses L-Lysine daily as a supplement with their babies?

ME!
Both my boys have it every morning but i would never known about it until i heard it recommended on here :)

I've tried the powder but they won't eat the food. I've tried the gel you smear on their feet/ legs. Too messy. The treats contain too many ingredients one of my cats is allergic to. ......so I've given up!!

I have this problem too. The treats give my guys the runs, and the powder makes them uninterested in their food. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I used the pump version called Enisyl-F with ^Yoda^(250 mg per push of the pump)
2x a day. She had runny eyes and it helped a lot.

The pump style is a convenience factor for me. I push a pump squirt onto my finger right before Toby's breakfast when he is most hungry. I give 1x a day to Toby as a supplement since he is not having any issues.

He licks off my finger within seconds.. Go figure chow hound!

The vet charged$25 for Enisly-F pump version. I ordered it on line for about $10

I am not sure how much the powder L-Lysine cost and I don't use wet food. I imagine it is more cost effective in powder.
I Stuck with the pump version. I did not order the treats since the pump worked fine here.

Toby has not had any eye or respiratory issues. I am giving ^Yoda's^ Stock pile of Enisyl-F. I will probably continue after we run out.

Again, Enisyl-F - each pump squirt is 250mg. I give Toby a squirt on my finger 1x day.
Enisly-F comes in a 100 ml pump.

I don't use it but my boys have never had any URI's so I've never seen the need. Might change in the future though.

ME!

All 4 Nakkids are on L-Lysine!!

I just started using it when I got pharmaceutical grade powder from online in the mail today!

Me, when I remember... usually 4x a week or so.

I'm going to follow this thread. Thanks Catzzzmeow!

We do, every day.

I'm considering buying some since all of the great advice from you guys is convincing!

I give it to all our pets 2 sphynx and 3 dogs. I do forget sometimes but it does help just 2 weeks ago Dalilah our boxer and Louie our Chinese Crested where sneezing and I gave it to them it boosted there system and saved me a trip to the vet.

I used to, now every 6 months they get a nasal vaccine

There is a nasal vaccine? Please elaborate, Fester....

Jeb gets it everyday

I use it also, for Izmae. Not me :p

yup twice a day she gets it on her food !

Since I just started using it, I have a further question. How much do people use on a daily basis and do you increase it when your kitty shows signs of illness? I have read conflicting suggestions of 250 mg daily then 500 mg if showing signs of illness, then back to 250 mg when well. OR another article suggesting only use when signs of illness present themselves so that the body is not used to it, it will have more of an effect than if you are continually using if..... Although in people it us recommended to take daily to prevent cold sores if you are prone up them so that they don't flare up so the first model I mentioned makes more sense to me. Wish I would have started earlier but you think URI's/illness won't happen to your kitty....

I only use it when they have any signs of upper respiratory infections.

My 2 sphynx and my 2 Cornies get it twice a day (250 mg each time) every day and my two furry babies get it once a day. Sammi will get extra a couple of days before, during and after a show. And I'll increase it if they show signs of illness.

My boys both get it as well. 250mg x 2 for Vito, half that for Odin for a few more months.

My kids get it too.

So does mine :) I'm going to have to order the powder kind though or look for a different lysine treat - they changed the texture and formula of the one I give to Zoa and she doesn't like them anymore >_<

Haven't used it yet but will do so if needed.

We do the 500mg 2xday for each of the nakkids and Fuzzy gets half that right now. I have to say I think it has helped tremendously with this last bout of URI when we brought Fuzzy into the house.

Could everyone please take the poll at the top of the thread on L-Lysine?

Thanks!

I don't have my nakeds yet, but will definitely be giving them lysine every day. I don't feel it's right for me to take the poll though as I have no experience yet, but did wish to express my thoughts. Cheers!

I just wonder what everyone else thinks about it boosting immune function for non herpes related URI's in cats? Wonder if there is research supporting its usage...

I haven't found any studies showing that lysine helps with anything other than herpes...

HOWEVER, the problem with a herpes flair-up usually isn't the herpes itself -- it's the secondary bacterial infections that take advantage of a flair up --
That's why you find vets like to give a antibiotic shot when treating a herpes flair up. The antibiotics won't do a dang thang for the herpes, but will help with those secondary infections.

So if you use lysine to prevent flair ups, you don't give the bacterial crap an open window to cause problems. I'm reasonably confident that the lysine doesn't help general health in any other fashion.
