Hey all! I have a beautiful two year old boy who is oh so sensitive. Has a sensitive tummy, now on urinary prescription good from crystals forming and after recent vet visit they are saying he needs a teeth cleaning. When I say sensitive… let me explain further. He will not open his mouth for the tooth brush. I try to brush his teeth and he won’t let me past the front. The back molars need to be cleaned.

With that said I’ve heard people say do not get your sphynx teeth cleaning someone told me it’ll kill them. He’s my first baby so I’m like obviously so protective over him, I’m so nervous but if I don’t get his teeth cleaned then that obviously puts him at risk for other things.

With others on here with sensitive babies, have you gotten your sphynx dental cleaning and was your experience positive?

Also he cannot have greenies… he is on a STRICT urinary prescription diet. He can’t even have a churu. Vet said prescription diet only to get rid of his crystals. He eats about 2 tbps of dry food a day which I was hoping would help a little but isn’t really.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

There are times when teeth cleaning is definitely called for. There can be staining with this breed due to the oil/wax on their skin and them cleaning. Tartar build up can happen, but my vet said the key thing is to look at their gums and any inflammation. As far as someone saying cleaning can kill your cat, they might be referring to the fact that the vet should not use Ketamine as an anesthesia with this breed and getting a full blood panel before any procedure is very helpful. With any procedure there are risks and trying to minimize them is key.

Ketamine can be fatal if there is an underlying heart condition and this breed is now seeing this more often. @mamajjean

@mamajjean , during a vet visit I saw a bottle of dental Maxiguard gel on the vets shelf (cheaper on chewy).
I have my pets charts marked in big letters on the file folder "NO Ketamine anesthesia).

I tried it on my senior aussie dog (who also had urine crystals.) and tartar on rear molars.
does your boy have struvite or oxalate crystals? I am assuming struvite crystals ?
is he neutered?

Maxiguard is a gel very liquidity. it comes with a little vitamin c powder, mix in , store in refrigerator.

I put drop on my finger and rubbed on front gums. you can rub on gums and it spreads in mouth.
I worked up to wetting q cotton exfoliating swissper round and rubbed on gums careful not to have him chomp on it. . after 1 month a whole junk of tartar come off!

**** you can ask your vet about maxiguard gel for your baby.

keep us updated. all paws are family. hugs n head smooches. here for you.

***always check with your vet for your individual kitty's needs and health history before trying products****
