speechless.

Tell me about it. I haven't had the the words for almost a week.

I'm so disappointed in Delta's lack of integrity. I thought they were a better company than this.

Honestly, I thought they were too. I was obviously incredibly upset due to the loss of my kitten, but I assumed they would at the very minimum do what they could. I guess I now know their true feelings towards my kitten & other animals who fly with them.

my husband would like to try to speak with delta, he is good at finding the right people to get the right results. if you would like him too please pm me your contact info
where this may exhaust you or I, my husband thrives on getting to the right people

I would LOVE any help I can get! I will PM you in a minute, THANK YOU!

Heather- you need to share this with FB and everyone you sent the initial blast of emails too. EVERY SITE that put your story up- needs an update- and you need to update them about this bullcrap.

I haven't had the words until now to be honest! I will send an update out everywhere! Hopefully it will make a difference.

Oh Heather, that is so disgusting and insulting. Do you have any other options to explore? Have you consulted an attorney? I know how absolutely draining this must be for you and your family. You have my heartfelt condolences!

Where to begin, god only knows. Taking it slowly, I don't want to do anything without being 100% sure it is the right move to make. Deep Breaths for now.

I'm so sorry! Their response is cold and worthless. I think of Snickers every day and it still breaks my heart:Cry: In honor of Snickers: I will never use Delta, my friends and family have said they will never use Delta and any one I can talk to will hear about this tragedy.

You are 100% right, their response is cold & absolutely WORTHLESS. I hope they read this blog, its public - YOUR RESPONSE WAS WORTHLESS.

Heather this is an outrage to the animal rights community. Here are a few resources.

Thank you! I am exploring ALL options right now, I bookmarked them!

From one Heather to another ;) DO NOT let them off the hook! Please don't sign anything. This is absolutely ludicrous - if you still have connections to those who helped you publicize this initially, please enlist their help again to make some noise! I know I am disgusted at Delta's insult, and know that this is untenable

That response wouldn't be worth the paper I would print it on to sign it, nonetheless the ink I would use to sign it, or the toll call to fax it back. puhlease. Principle ALONE means I won't sign it. My morals mean more to me then their disgusting response. You can't put a price tag on life & I can't believe they would dare send that to me. $10.

Another note, I am curious to know your breeders point of view on all of this. I'm sure she had good intentions when shipping but in weather as cold as it was it still causes me some concern. I don't feel the kitten should have been shipped in such cold weather but regardless I do feel this is Delta's fault at the same time.

The breeder is a very nice woman who has been really great & supportive throughout this whole ordeal. She had shipped with Delta for many years with no "incidents" & was always assured her babies were being properly cared for & would be in climate control. Like I, she didn't know that when the cargo hold depressurizes, it is no longer climate controlled. If she knew, I know she wouldn't have shipped any animals in cold weather like this. She trusted Delta's word that her babies were safe. She had no reason to believe otherwise, they certainly DO NOT tell people about the climate control loss once a plane lands. Doubtful they would get many bookings if they did.

I am so upset by Delta! Please make sure this absurd $10 settlement offer is publicized to numerous places. I will avoid flying Delta at all costs!

It is my mission tonight! I promise!

I'm shocked and appalled. I could have guessed from the tone of their emails that they weren't going to even come close to doing the right thing, but $10 is ludicrous. Even though they are a huge, heartless corporation, I figured they would have done better simply for public relations purposes. We already knew they weren't compassionate human beings from the way you and your family were treated from the beginning. Jerks!

You & me alike. I figured they would come back at a low figure, but to read their response, I got goose bumps & wanted to scream. Talk about heartless.

Heather, My heart breaks for you all over again!! My mom got more than that when they lost a piece of her luggage with dirty clothes in it!!!!

I would sooner WALK than fly Delta!!!!!

You got it! They will NEVER get a red cent from me or my family EVER again. While they may shrug at that, I will be sure everyone I know hears how disgusting & heartless they are so they know & from there, they can make their own decision. **insert expletive here**

Well we all know that $10 is absurd!!!! but my question is what has the breeder said or done for you? I understand that Snickers died because of the cold but, I still can not understand why a breeder would ship a kitten that was 11 weeks old to a place that was 7 degrees? At any age that is just too cold. That is where breeder responsibility comes in.

Ah, missed this one when I responded, sorry about that! The breeder had no idea that the cargo hold lost climate control once the plane landed. Delta does not "advertise" or tell anyone that when they book the flights for their animals. If she knew, I am positive the flight would have been rescheduled. If I knew, the flight would have been rescheduled. It's why I keep publicizing what happened, people just don't know. And if they knew & put an animal on a plane, then they are just as much at fault. I believe if she knew, she would have made the right decision. She has stood by my side this entire time & has been just as outraged. I am allot more vocal then she is, and I am also in a different position -- I am a family, she is a breeder, allot of people don't like breeders & the story wouldn't have been taken as seriously as it was. (At least I think) Hope that helps answer!

This is the way I see the issues with shipping a kitten... I've heard people say, "Well, at such a young age- a kitten shouldn't be shipped" (regardless of 11 weeks, 12 weeks or whatever).

If you are told your kitten will be in a temperature controlled climate- in your mind, your kitten is no more exposed to the elements then when you run from your vehicle in the freezing cold into the vet office for visits. In your mind- that's what you see. Most REGULAR owners have no clue what it involves to ship a kitten- heck, most breeders have no clue either.

Heather- you need to sit and write a very eloquent piece like your original post and then send it to everyone who has posted about Snickers- including your FB fanpage.

I can't believe they aren't even offering you the price you paid for the ticket, plus the price you paid for Snickers, and then some. Absolutely CRAZY and insulting they are offering you $10!!! I would definitely take the update to the press and let everyone know how Delta has acted with this. I mean, how ridiculous!! Too bad you can't just go straight to Delta's CEO and let them know what you think and how this is being handled.

Well, below is a story that has always given me comfort when I have suffered the loss of my own babies. I just love the message it gives- that even though we are destined to suffer their loss, we still choose them (and tears) even though it may only be a minute we have them, or years. I hope it brings you a little comfort today.

THE LITTLE ORANGE BOY

The little orange boy stopped.
Behind him, kitties were playing, chasing each other and
wrestling in the warm sunshine.
It looked like so much fun, but in front of him, through
the clear stillness of the pond's water, he could see his mommy.
And she was crying.
He pawed at the water, trying to get at her, and when
that didn't work, he jumped into the shallow water. All that got him was wet and Mommy's image danced away in the ripples.
"Mommy!" he cried. "Is something wrong?" The little orange boy turned
around.

A lady was standing at the edge of the pond, her eyes
sad but filled with love.
The little orange boy sighed and walked out of the water.
"There's been a mistake," he said. "I'm not supposed to be here."
He looked back at the water.
It was starting to still again and his mommy's image was coming back.
"I'm just a baby. Mommy said it had to be a mistake. She said I wasn't
supposed to come here yet." The kind lady sighed and sat down on the grass.
The little orange boy climbed into her lap.
It wasn't Mommy's lap, but it was almost as good.
When she started to pet him and scratch under his chin like he liked, he
started to purr. He hadn't wanted to, but he couldn't help it.
"I'm afraid there is no mistake. You are supposed to be
here and your mommy knows it deep down in her heart," the lady said.
The little orange boy sighed and laid his head on the lady's leg.
"But she's so sad. It hurts me to see her cry. And daddy too."
"But they knew right from the beginning this would happen."
"That I was sick?"

That surprised the little orange boy.
No one had ever said anything and he had listened when
they thought he was sleeping.
All he had heard them talk about was how cute he was, or
how fast he was or how big he was getting.
"No, not that you were sick," the lady said.
"But you see, they chose tears."
"No, they didn't," the little orange boy argued. Who would choose to cry?
The lady gently brushed the top of his head with a kiss.
It made him feel safe and loved and warm - but he still worried about his mommy.

"Let me tell you a story," the lady said.
The little orange boy looked up and saw other animals gathering around.
Cats - Big Boy and Snowball and Shamus and Abby and little Cleo and Robin.
Merlin and Toby and Iggy and Zachary. Sweetie and Kamatte and OBie.
Dogs too- Sally and Baby and Morgan and Rocky and Belle.
Even a lizard named Clyde and some rats named Saffron and
Becky and a hamster named Odo.
They all lay down near the kind lady and looked up at her, waiting.
She smiled at them and began:

A long long time ago, the Loving Ones went to the Angel
in Charge. They were lonesome and asked the Angel to help them.
The Angel took them to a wall of windows and let them
look out the first window at all sorts of things - dolls and stuffed
animals and cars and toys and sporting events. "Here are things
you can love," the Angel said. "They will keep you from being lonesome."
"Oh, thank you," the Loving Ones said. "These are just what we need."
"You have chosen Pleasure," the Angel told them.

But after a time the Loving Ones came back to the Angel in Charge.
"Things are okay to love," they said. "But they don't care that we love them."
The Angel in Charge led them over to the second window. It looked out at all sorts of wild animals. "Here are animals to love," he said. "They will know you love them."
So the Loving Ones hurried out to care for the wild
animals. "You have chosen Satisfaction," the Angel said.

Some of the Loving Ones worked at zoos and wild animal
preserves, some just had bird feeders in their yards, but after a time they
all came back to the Angel in Charge.
"They know we love them," they told the Angel. "But they don't love us back. We want to be loved in return."
So the Angel took them to the third window and showed
them lots of people walking around, hurrying places.
"Here are people for you to love," the Angel told them.
So the Loving Ones hurried off to find other people to love.
"You have chosen Commitment," the Angel said.

But after a time a lot of Loving Ones came back to the
Angel in Charge.
"People were okay to love," they said. "But sometimes
they stopped loving us and left. They broke our hearts."
The Angel just shook his head. "I cannot help you," he said.
"You will have to be satisfied with the choices I gave you."

As the Loving Ones were leaving, someone saw a window
off to one side and hurried to look out.
Through it, they could see puppies and kittens and dogs
and cats and lizards and hamsters and ferrets.
The other Loving Ones hurried over. "What about these?" they asked.
But the Angel just tried to shoo them away.
"Those are Personal Empathy Trainers," he said.
"But there's a problem with their system operations."
"Would they know that we love them?" someone asked.
"Yes," the Angel said.
"Would they love us back?" another asked.
"Yes," the Angel said.
"Will they stop loving us?" someone else asked.
"No," the Angel admitted. "They will love you forever."
"Then these are what we want," the Loving Ones said.
But the Angel was very upset.

"You don't understand," he told them. "You will have to
feed these animals."
"That's all right," the Loving Ones said.
"You will have to clean up after them and take care of them forever."
"We don't care."
The Loving Ones did not listen. They went down to where
the Pets were and picked them up, seeing the love in their own hearts
reflected in the animals' eyes.

"They were not programmed right," the Angel said. "We can't offer a
warranty. We don't know how durable they are. Some of their systems
malfunction very quickly, others last a long time."
But the Loving Ones did not care.
They were holding the warm little bodies and finding
their hearts so filled
with love that they thought they would burst.
"We will take our chances," they said.
"You do not understand." The Angel tried one more time.
"They are so dependent on you that even the most well-made of them is
not designed to out live you. You are destined to suffer their loss."
The Loving Ones looked at the sweetness in their arms
and nodded.
"That is how it should be. It is a fair trade for the
love they offer."

The Angel just watched them all go, shaking his head.
"You have chosen Tears," he whispered.

"So it is," the kind lady told the kitties.
"And so each mommy and daddy knows. When they take a baby into their heart, they know that one day it will leave them and they will cry."
The little orange boy sat up. "So why do they take us in?" he asked.
"Because even a moment of your love is worth years of pain later."
"Oh."

The little orange boy got off the lady's lap and went back to the edge of the pond. His mommy was still there, and still crying.
"Will she ever stop crying?" he asked the kind lady.
She nodded. "You see, the Angel felt sorry for the
Loving Ones, knowing how much they would suffer. He couldn't take the tears away but he made them special."

She dipped her hand into the pond and let the water
trickle off her fingers.
"He made them healing tears, formed from the special water here.
Each tear holds bits of all the happy times of purring
and petting and shared love.
And the promise of love once again.

As your mommy cries, she is healing. It may take a long
while, but the tears will help her feel better. In time she will be less sad
and she will smile when she thinks of you.
And then she will open her heart again to another little baby."
"But then she will cry again one day," the little orange
boy said.

The lady just smiled at him as she got to her feet.
"No, she will love again. That is all she will think
about."
She picked up Big Boy and Snowball and gave them hugs,
then scratched
Morgan's ear just how she liked.

"Look," she said. "The butterflies have come. Shall we
go over to play?"
The other animals all ran ahead, but the little orange
boy wasn't ready to leave his mommy.
"Will I ever get to be with her again?"
The kind lady nodded.
"You'll be in the eyes of every kitty she looks at.
You'll be in the purr of
every cat she pets. And late at night, when she's fast
asleep, your spirit will snuggle up close to her and you both will feel at
peace.

One day soon, you can even send her a rainbow to tell her you're safe
and waiting here for when it's her turn to come."
"I would like that," the little orange boy said and took
one long look at his mommy.
He saw her smile slightly through her tears and he knew
she had remembered the time he almost fell into the bathtub.
"I love you, Mommy," he whispered. "It's okay if you
cry."

He glanced over at the other pets, running and playing
and laughing with the butterflies.
"Uh, Mommy? I gotta go play now, okay? But I'll be
around, I promise."
Then he turned and raced after the others.

I'm appauled and disgusted. TEN DOLLARS? 50 cents A POUND? I don't even know what to say. Please, please, please don't sign a thing. At the very least, Delta needs to pay for the cost of the kitten and for the cost of the flight. And, that's at the very minimum.

I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I know that it's exhausting....But, Delta needs to learn a lesson. They need to step forward and admit to their failure. I will never use Delta. Ever.

That is good that she is helpful to you, as she should be but I wonder what her reaction would be if you felt this was her fault.
I am sorry but as a breeder if she is going to ship her pets she needs to know what happens when they are on the plane and not assume. This is one of the reasons we do not ship as on their website it clearly states that once on the ground that the animal could be in the cold or hot depending on the outside temp. for up to 1 hour and to consult a vet to find out if your pet can tolerate these conditions. It also stated only 3 or 4 airports have temp controlled holding for pets and conn. is not one of them. It also stated that flights should be made during the day when cold or early a.m. when warm if the pet would have trouble with temp. Poor snickers flight was landing at 8:15 p.m.

I am sorry for those who do not agree with me but I just do not see how a breeder would ship a pet of any kind without having all the information first. This kitten should have never been put on the plane going to any state with a cold winter.

But shouldn't the check in counter have stopped Snickers from boarding? I know when Gummi flew to me, they checked the weather at all of her stops and if the temps were too high anywhere she could not fly. She was arriving at night when temps were cooler, but if the day's high temp was over the limit they would not let her board at all. Did Delta check in do the same thing?

The website says it could be as cold as 10 degrees for up to 1 hour and if you think the animal can not handle that you should contact your vet. With heat they say over 85 degrees but I was more looking at the cold so I could be wrong on that.
I am not saying that 10 degrees is not too cold but they did follow what is stated on the website.
It says that the pet could be in 10 degrees for up to 60 minutes and Snickers was delivered in 50 minutes.
No this still does not make it right I think it just puts the blame else where.

No reason to be sorry at all, voice your opinion! I have learned that I don't need to agree with someone & they don't need to agree with me, but we all need to listen. (Not saying I disagree with you, just that you don't need to apologize for having an opinion & expressing it!)

At this point, I am just concentrating on what I can change. I can't change what happened or anyone's decision (including my own uninformed decision) to ship Snickers. But what I can do is speak up for her rights & do all I can to help potentially save another animals life through knowledge.

First, I want to express my sincerest sympathies to you.

This incident boggles my mind completely.

I also wanted you to know that it infurated me enough to write this response to Delta.

Are you serious, Delta?

First your negligence kills puppies last summer and then your neglect and ignorance kills a Sphynx kitten by leaving it in sub-freezing weather to die.

To make it all worse, your ignorant and now repugnant company offers to pay for the loss of this animal a measly $10?

Are you completely serious?

When I moved to the Detroit area, I made it a point to go out of my way to give my patronage to Northwest because they had a huge presence here... the same as I did to American Airlines when I lived in the Dallas area.

When Delta acquired NWA, I moved my patronage to Delta again since it was giving back to my local community.

I now see that blind faith was misgiven. As a Sphynx owner, I cannot begin to tell you how incredibly insulting your feable gesture was.

What I can tell you is that I will now take back that faith I had and there is *NOTHING* you can do to win this back.

I would rather run rat feces along my backside than to sit it on the seat of one of your planes.

I will now fly the skies with your AA brethren. The Sky Nazis are definitely better for my health and sanity than your seriously flawed company.

Thank you and have a pleasant eternity... without my patronage.

While I don't expect they will care too much at the loss of one passenger, I do expect to never deal with them again.

The complete boneheaded-ness of any corporate entity deserves ridicule. IMO, this is the only way a company can understand how completely insane its actions are.

I apologize if this is a misplaced sentiment, but it's definitely got my ire to working overtime tonight. :(

I am speechless. Please don't give up. Try to talk with one of the
Lawers, that was posted on this forum. Yes, all this needs to be reported again.
Everywhere it was the first time. I to also, think since it is posted on the airlines
policies, that the breeder should be held accountable also. I know if I
was a breeder, I would know all the details there was to know about
how my babies would be taken care of and handled. I would not trust anyones
word. I have found out ( NICE ) doesn't always pay off. People will tell you
anything to sell you something or get out of their responsibilty. But, I think
you need to get this out there, so other people will know about Delta and
how they treat their pets. I know maybe their policys says" WHATEVER" it says
but, could they not get the cat off as soon as they landed and got the door open
because it was cold and this was a living animal, and have a heart.
I think they both were at fault in diffrent ways myself. This is just my opinion.
But I think both Delta and the owner should stand up and do the right thing.
If they were good hearted kind loving people, they would and not have
to be made or told to.

This whole situation makes me numb. I am so sorry for what you are going through. Stay strong, and please make this as public as you possibly can, for Snickers and all other animals! Delta shouldn't get away with this...They shouldn't even be aloud to ship animals, period.

Dear Heather,

I was so saddened to learn about your loss. As a journalist and cat fancier, I've written an article about this incident, which you might find helpful. It is called "Kitten freezes in Delta Air Lines cargo hold".

On a personal level, I am appalled by the cavalier attitude taken by Delta Air Lines, and as a way of dealing with your grief and to seek closure, I would encourage you to pursue this matter further. There are attorneys who specialize in aviation law. If you send me a private message, I'll be happy to forward some names to you, although I have no way of judging the legal merits of your case.

Also, when transporting live cargo in the future, I also wrote an article about a special airlines which carries pets inside the passenger cabin, checks on them every 10 minutes, and as applicable takes them out for a walk or for some play time. That article is called "Critters get VIP treatment on Pet Airways".

Please contact me should you have any questions.

All good wishes and cheers,
Joel

Heather,

First, I am so sorry you and your family have had to go through this. The emotional toll has got to be exhausting. Like others I am simply angry beyond words for the heartlessness this situation has been handle with by Delta as well as the breeder.

Should you feel up for it I do think there is probably a local news station you could contact about this that might run with the story. I agree that at a minimum people should be made aware of exactly what they are going to get when they transport anything live with Delta Airlines and this would help get it out there.

It's not about the money. It's about the loss of life and the suffering. While I know you realize this, I think Delta and the breeder should be made aware of it as well. Again, I know you have to be emotionally drained at a times taking care of ourselves has to be a priority too.

I would no more communicate with either Delta nor the breeder ever again and should they contact you I feel a strong middle finger would be in order.

Good luck to you and your family whatever decisions you may make. My thoughts and prayers are still with you.

Delta should NOT be allowed to transport pets... I've read today where they "lost" another spyhnx baby enroute to their new home in WA state - instead was sent to Washington DC! smh

Well Sorry to say but this does not surprise me at all! The word still needs to get out there!! To everyone breeder, pet lovers etc!! We need to stop this!!!!

Hi Guys, wanted to give a quick update & also let everyone know that there is a airline pilot forum that has been watching/reading & reposting my responses on these threads. **waves** Hi Pilots, hope you are enjoying the reading material. I myself did some reading on your forum. I am not impressed & find your actions detestable.

Sphynx Lair -- here is something a pilot for Delta Airlines finds funny. I hope you are proud of yourself, you are certainly one sick individual & belong with Delta.

On another note, I was contacted by someone who works for Delta & wanted to remain anonymous, would you like to hear the newest blow? They have the ability to heat cargo after the plane lands! You got it, Snickers froze to death because a pilot was lazy. After reading the fact that they find her death hilarious, I am even more mortified that this same group of people are the ones who killed her in the first place.
