I moved into my own (studio) flat from my parent's detached house and my sphynx moved with me. My folks' house had a lot bigger toilet where I kept my cat's litter and the air conditioning was better too so the smell of the litter didn't bother at all, you couldn't really smell anything.

Now that the litter is in my old, teeny tiny toilet/bathroom, the smell is really bad and the the door to my bathroom is basically in my kitchen and it's not very cool to eat where I can smell the you-know-what.

Right now I'm using crystal litter and a lot of people say it's very good but it's just not doing the job well enough for us.

So, could any of you recommend me something better and less smellier type of litter? What kinds of litters do you use (you know pellet, crystal etc)?

Or if you have any tips and tricks to mitigate the smell, that would be ace too!

Thanks so much :)

Hi there,

Some cats' pee makes litter smell far worse than other cats. I tried corn based litter and recycled paper litter as well as pellet with my guy, and OMG... even HE wouldn't pee in his litterbox after a while.

An odour absorbing clumping clay may be your best bet. Dr. Elsey's is popular. I use one by Intersand called OdourLock.

If, on the other hand, you're not talking about litter, but poop itself, this has to do with what they eat and you probably don't want to change your kitty's diet.

And welcome to the 'Lair!

I use Cats Oko plus. No smell as it clumps. My house is very small and I scoop as soon as they use it if I can and dump it in a Litter Locker also, no smell. Works for us!!

I live in Denmark, and we dont have most of the brands mentioned here. But I use Everclean clumping cat litter (unscented). It clumps very well, but still - the smell was violent! And I dont think it would matter what brand I used, the stench was too foul. Because of that I switched to raw. That has been a blessing! Its hardly a week since I switched, but the difference is amazing. No smell at all. And we have a very small flat, with the kitchen close to the bathroom. That was really nasty! Hard to even have guests over when it smells that bad!

Hello @Anna Enora and welcome to sphynxlair for you and your sphynx. What's his/her name?
And congrats with your first own home! An exciting new period in your life:). Hope it's going to be a great time.

I live in the Netherlands so don't have the same brand as in your place. I use the bio cats micro. I make sure to scoop the poop and pee balls out twice a day. As soon as I get the poop out the litterbox, the smell is gone! Oh and I just forbid them to use the litterbox while I'm eating:).

Thanks so much! Her name is Isla :)
I live in Finland so I probably can't have the recommended brands either so I'm just gonna look for similar ones.

Thank you guys for helping! I think I'm gonna go for a clumping litter, hopefully it works better.

Isla, what a beautiful name! And of course now I have a new question:): do you want to share a pic of Isla? I know it has nothing to do with cat litter but we just love pics of sphynx here!

Beautiful country you live in. A clumping litter is the kind of litter I use. That way it's easier to scoop out peeballs. Hope it works for you and you can enjoy your meal again:)

I use Tesco Wood Pellet litter. It's not dusty, and it smells like sawdust (breaks down into that, too). Woody, rather than cat littery.
It doesn't clump, but Pixie doesn't seem to mind. She doesn't bury her poo tho, but it's pretty firm and non stinky (well, not very) so I just lift it out and drop it in the loo. (Same with the sawdust bits, a little a day, flush, all clean and non smelly.)
Have a look if you can get some wood pellet litter and try it. :)
I'm using the finer one next, hopefully that'll not get dragged all over...

P.S. I feed Royal Canin Sphynx, or Royal Canin Indoor dry food. (She is not keen on wet food at all, completely ignores it.) I went from UBER smelly (Think Poison Gas Attack) to... "There's a cat?" inside of a week. Definitely worth it.
Zooplus has an offer atm for 10kg with an extra 2kg free. It's not cheap, but... :)
I don't know how much it would be in DK, but in the UK it's £42-ish for those 12kg of Indoor atm.
Well worth it, as it lasts quite a while. (They are a Germany company, shipping was free.)

You should try the Swedish Pee Wee system ...It wood pellets and the least smelly litter system I've tried...and the best part:doesn't smell..and really cheap! I've tried nearly everything you can imagine ..but pee wee is incredible! Now u don't spend hours everyday obsessing over sand around the flat..try it!

That's the same type wood pellets I use. :)
The "fine" stuff I tried...yeah. Dusty and horrible. I'm sticking with the wood pellets. But the litter tray is interesting. Although, I just sift through into another tray and clear the sawdust out.
Thanks for posting though, I'd never heard of it.

I am considering the pee wee, thanks for mentioning it Caroline. Found it on a German site called CatAmore as it's not stocked in the UK anymore. If I get it, I'll let you know how it goes Annika.
