He’s grumpy but his pain seems okay. I have to head to work so my girl is taking him to the dermatologist. I’ll update when I get off.

Bless that sweet baby boy. That looks quite awful for sure. Is he still guarding or can you touch him if you try? Did the vet say what they expect the healing process to go like? I’m assuming that is all dead tissue and he’ll have to slough it off, no?

I am so sorry for what you and poor Vikar are going through. Not diluting the dip!? I am horrified by this.

Just some information for you regarding R/W assuming all else goes well with your baby....

There are 3 main types of R/W and they do not all fluoresce under a Woods lamp, which is different from a black light.

The vet can order a PCR for R/W which comes back much faster. The culture does take much longer as you mentioned. In my experience we did the PCR which was back within a couple of days. When everyone was coming back negative except one, they did the culture which came back negative. The PCR tells you if there are dermatophytes present, the culture tells you if they are active/alive.

There are lots of good resources for disinfecting the environment. Steam cleaning, 10% bleach solution (be sure to rinse) and activated hydrogen peroxide disinfectant will help decontaminate. Be careful not to use the bleach on anything you've used the activated hydrogen peroxide on. Never mix anything with the bleach.

Vacuum and dust daily, wash blankets and bedding. Keep kitty confined for easier cleaning.

If Vikar had R/W after these burns, ask your new vet for a prescription of oral meds, usually Itraconazole one week on, one week off for 8 weeks. Hopefully he is old enough to use this medication. Twice weekley (minimim) baths with chlorhexidine/miconazole shampoo. The one that I know if is made by Dechra.

You will likley have to wait till his skin is healed to treat him topically. I am so sorry this happened. Please keep us posted on his progress. Love and Hugs

Still at work but my girlfriend sent this and said they’ve scheduled his surgery for next week. Were scheduled to pick him up tomorrow night. Thank you to everyone for the replies and advice I don’t have time to address all of them but we really appreciate the support.

Not to worry you more and they may have already told you, but tissue debridement is incredibly agony. I’ve gone through it myself unmedicated and it was the single most painful experience of my life. All that to simply say, while I know they are probably putting him under anesthesia to do the debridement of the dead tissue, please make sure he has more than methadone at home for the recovery process. That tissue is going to be raw. It will be more sensitive than an exposed blister and all over his body. Basically like something between a 2nd and 3rd degree sunburn. My personal recommendation (having gone through a tail amputation with my Sphynx) would be a combination of Tramadol every 8 hrs and Torbugesic on an alternating 8 hr schedule. If you are doing any wound care at home try to time it for about an hr after you give the Torbugesic. I’m hoping that they send him home with wet to dry dressings around the treated area as well (it’s a specific type of wound treatment for large affected areas). It will heal much faster and would also help with pain because then the tissue would not be so exposed.

I hope I have helped and not caused you extra stress. Hugs

So good news is that the infection is under control and that he is healing remarkably well. His pain is under control and seems to be same temperament as before he had the dip. He’s starting to jump up on furniture and regaining some mobility and wanting to play. The dermatologist said yesterday that they didn’t find any traces of fungus so we decided to take him out of quarantine which has definitely helped his mood. We have another appointment scheduled for this coming Thursday and they should have a better idea of whether he’ll need surgery but they were optimistic he wouldn’t yesterday so as of now no surgery scheduled.

Omg... The burns are so awful. I couldn't help but tear up looking at the pictures you posted. What a little trooper.

Please post a review of that veterinary practice to warn others in your area and report them to the state board. That was a potentially lethal mistake and they should be held fully responsible.

I am really hoping his surgery and the healing process goes as smoothly as possible. Please continue to update on his status and give him some extra treats for us.

It looks pretty gnarly but it’s drying up and a ton is starting to slough off revealing fresh skin underneath. The darkest parts are questionable but the lighter areas are revealing clean skin underneath. The rest of his body that isn’t affected is just as smooth/oily as it was before and all the pimples have disappeared
